One of our most rewarding projects was the transformation of a neglected hospital courtyard into a tranquil and inviting garden for NHS staff at Stamford Hospital.
A Vision for Well-being
The hospital’s nurses and staff needed an outdoor space where they could relax, socialise, and reflect in peace. However, the existing concrete courtyard was uninspiring and rarely used. Our goal was to design a garden that encouraged both interaction and solitude, offering areas for group gatherings while maintaining private spaces for quiet contemplation.
Thoughtful Design for a Functional Space
To create a sense of intimacy and structure, we divided the garden into multiple small seating areas, using Venetian-style trellis and Portuguese laurel hedging to provide natural partitions. Lush perennial borders softened the space, adding vibrant seasonal colour and texture to enhance the relaxing atmosphere.
At the heart of the garden, a central communal seating area was introduced, encouraging social interaction and fostering a sense of community among the hospital staff. Additionally, raised herb and vegetable beds were incorporated, allowing NHS staff to grow and tend to plants—a therapeutic activity proven to support mental well-being.
A Community Effort
Built in 2022, this transformation was made possible through collaboration. Stamford Landscapes, NHS staff, and local volunteers came together over several summer weekends to bring the vision to life. This shared effort not only created a beautiful and functional garden but also strengthened bonds within the hospital community.
